Racism from people who should know better

I can deal with people who are openly hateful, racist and small-minded. What this election season has taught me, though, is how far we still have to go as a nation. When progressive and highly educated white folks send me E Mails of fear about Michelle Obama's college thesis or Barack Obama's hatred of whites or his being a secret Muslim, I feel a deep sense of pain and sorrow.

I never fully appreciated how many intelligent white people are afraid of blacks.

Scott,
I'm such a turkey; I haven't been here in a while. I have been thinking of you with all this Obama-bashing by way of Jeremiah White-bashing.

What I infer is that the worst Obama's critics can say about him is that he has a kooky pastor ready for retirement. If that's all the dirt there is to dig up, all I can say is cool.

In wonder, too, how many church-going folks out there claim responsibility for every word that comes out of their pastors' mouths. It's absurd.

I'm with you. But it's nice to know the hate-mongers are out of material!

The only thing you say, Sandy, that I would disagree with is that they are out of material. I read in Newsweek how one woman is upset because Obama joked about removing the bowling alley from the White House. That was a factor in her vote in PA. Ok, so that woman is obviously an idiot. Still, smarter people will still come up with the next thing like flag pins, preachers, "bitter" (which was accurate), or, who knows, maybe that Obama eats chocolate ice cream, which proves he hates white people. You heard it here first. I don't know what flavor ice cream he eats in all honesty, and I hope it is coffee, but let's start the next attack!!

American's don't know what to do with Obama...he addresses the real issues we face as a country instead of dividing us. He makes people think and we are uncomfortable having to think to much. We need him more than we know.

I know what you mean. I know a lot of stupid people and many of them are my relatives, but I still don't understand what it is that drives their thoughts. Am I a racist because I wrote a paper that Malcolm X was the greatest leader in America of the 20th Century(Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain gets my nod as greatest ever)?

I heard that Obama wants to appease Hitler by giving Osama bin Laden Czechoslovakia.

Obama can't give Osama Czechoslovakia. It does not exist! That said, a lot of this stuff has been fueled by a lowball campaign by HRC and poor media coverage. However, ultimately, it comes down to the people and it is time for us to move beyond our fears. I worry as to whether we are capable of that when I watch voters in PA, WV and Kentuck.
